STEVEN GATHMAN, PIANIST, VOCAL COACH, CONDUCTOR
CHORUS MASTER, THE WASHINGTON NATIONAL OPERA

Pianist and conductor Steven Gathman serves as Chorus Master and Head of Music Staff of the Washington National Opera, a post he has held since 1997. Before that he served as Assistant Chorus Master and Music Administrator for the opera. Since 1997 he has prepared the chorus in over 60 productions and conducted performances of Don Giovanni, Abduction from the Seraglio, Tosca, The Barber of Seville, and Die Walküre. In 1998 the Washington National Opera Chorus and soloists performed at the White House under Mr. Gathman’s direction for a state dinner in honor of the Italian Prime Minister. He also appeared on stage and the subsequent PBS broadcast of La Rondine as M. Robin. Recent concert performances include appearances at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Canadian Embassy, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, the Dame Myra Hess Series, and on the Continental Bank Series and Mozart Live both on WFMT radio. He has also served on the music staffs of Michigan Opera Theatre, Opera Pacific, The Greater Buffalo Opera, and the Festival Dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy. In addition to his duties at the opera he has also taught in the opera department of the University of Maryland, College Park and has been a guest coach at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. He holds a BMus in piano from DePaul University, and a DMA in piano accompanying and chamber music from the University of Michigan.

The Washington Post wrote of La Clemenza di Tito: "The supple, detailed performance was conducted by Steven Gathman."
