DUO MILLER SCHMID, Cello and Piano

This pair of virtuoso musicians, the New York pianist, Annlynn Miller, and the Swiss cellist, Ulrich Schmid, came together in 1995 to form a permanent Duo dedicated to performing the major works of the piano and cello repertoire. They have received lavish praise for their performances in the United States (Carnegie Hall, NYC; the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. etc.) and throughout Europe. In addition to the complete works for piano and cello of Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, the Duo is renowned for its interpretation of the sonatas of Alfred Schnittke and of his still unpublished “Epilogue“ for the ballet, “Peer Gynt” for Cello, Piano and Tape. The Duo has gained an outstanding reputation on both sides of the Atlantic. Audiences everywhere are continually fascinated by the total symbiosis heard in the performances by this permanent Duo—a rarity in itself!

Annlynn Miller, Piano, is wide acclaimed as an extraordinarily dynamic and sensitive concert pianist. Her all-encompassing repertoire of solo and chamber music and her extensive recordings for European audio stations have enabled her to captivate audiences in major cities and capitals throughout the United States and Europe.

Annlynn Miller was born in New York City and pursued her musical studies at the Juilliard School of Music and at Sarah Lawrence College before joining the advanced performing class of Europe's foremost professor, Bruno Seidelhofer at the Vienna Academy of Music. A longtime protegée of Rudolf Firkusny, Ms. Miller was also invited to participate in the Beethoven master classes held in Italy by the legendary Wilhelm Kempff. Her affinity for Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms have contributed greatly to her international career.

A former member of the faculty at Sarah Lawrence College and at the Richard-Strauss-Conservatory in Munich, Annlynn Miller produced a remarkable number of prize winners since establishing her piano class in Switzerland.

Ulrich Schmid, Cello, has established a distinguished career as cello soloist throughout Europe and the United States. Born in Bern, Switzerland, he was accepted at a young age into the master class of Paul Tortelier at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. A student of Professor André Navarra, he attained his concert diploma at the Musikhochschule in Detmold, Germany and subsequently became his assistant before he began teaching his own cello class at the same Musikhochschule. He held the position of principal cellist with the Bielefeld Philharmonic as well as the orchestra of the State Theater in Darmstadt (Germany). A recipient of the renowned Diploma d'Onore in Siena (Italy), Ulrich Schmid performs on a magnificent Italian cello made by the eminent master luthier Nicolas Gagliano in 1774.

His compact disc recordings of the cello concerti by Bloch, Villa-Lobos, Honegger, Stamitz and Mozart (Bassoon Concerto) have enhanced his excellent reputation.
