Please join us in congratulating CONDUCTOR KENNETH SLOWIK, The Smithsonian Chamber Players & Santa Fe Pro Musica with soloists John Elwes, tenor and Russell Braun, baritone, on receiving a 2008 Grammy nomination for their superb and revelatory recording of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde in the chamber orchestra version by Arnold Schönberg (begun in 1921 and completed by Rainer Riehn in 1983). The booklet which comes with the CD contains extensive program notes by Mr. Slowik and includes the texts (in the original German and in English translation) of the poems set by Mahler in this magnificent work, called by the composer "the most personal thing I ever wrote."
We are delighted to welcome pianist, vocal coach, and conductor STEVEN
GATHMAN to our roster. Mr. Gathman is the highly-regarded Chorus Master
of The Washington National Opera and has also conducted performances of
several productions for the Company over the past several seasons,
always to critical acclaim.
MAESTRO PETER BAY and the Austin Symphony will be "at home" in the
spring of 2008 at the new Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Center for the
Performing Arts, a move Bay and the Symphony have been anticipating for
many months. The Center will bring cultural life in Austin to an
exciting new level.
Kinetic painter NORMAN PERRYMAN made a memorable appearance at the 2007
Greenwich (CT) Music Festival where he created his extraordinary 'visual
music' - making watercolor paintings on glass plates as the evolving
images are projected on a huge screen for the audience to see - during
live performances of music by John Adams (his "Hallelujah Junction,"
played by pianists Steven Beck and Andrew Armstrong) and Camille
Saint-Saens (the chamber version of his "Carnival of the Animals,"
performed by composer Huang Ruo's ensemble F.I.R.E.).
Tenor COREY EVAN ROTZ made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Collegiate
Chorale in 2007; he sang the role of Raymond in the Chorale's concert
performance of Tchaikovsky's opera "The Maid of Orleans."
Violinist AMY BETH HORMAN continues her busy schedule of orchestral and
recital performances while devoting as much time as possible to her
passion for coaching and teaching. Recently she developed an intriguing
two-semester course for aspiring young professionals entitled "The Art
of Practice and Performance," portions of which she is currently
presenting at such centers as Strathmore Hall (MD).
Originally known for his work as a period instrument specialist,
Conductor KENNETH SLOWIK is now becoming a sought-after guest conductor
and conductor/soloist with major modern-instrument orchestras. Recent
appearances include engagements with the National Symphony in
Washington, DC and with the Vancouver Symphony, among others. Slowik is
also active as an instrumentalist, performing and recording as a
cellist, gambist, fortepianist. His highly-regarded discography is
extensive and includes many unusual offerings; a number of discs are
scheduled for release during the 2008-09 season, among which will be
Volume I of a 20-volume transversal of the complete trios for baryton,
viola and cello of Joseph Haydn. Additional release date information
will be available here soon.
Austrian bass-baritone ANDREAS LEBEDA continues to explore the wondrous
world of 'lieder' in his annual series of concerts, "vokal-issen;" many
of Mr. Lebeda's most esteemed vocal and instrumental colleagues appear
with him in intriguing programs with repertoire from Schumann, Schubert
and Brahms through contemporary works by such composers as Kurtag and
Othmar Schoeck.
One of the newest additions to our roster, the Swiss-based piano/cello
DUO MILLER SCHMID (pianist Annlynn Miller and cellist Ulrich Schmid) is
visiting the United States with increasing frequency as more and more
audiences and presenters become acquainted with their marvelous
artistry. Watch this page for venue announcements for their January
2008 tour.
Opera and vocal consultant ED PURRINGTON continues his activities as a
vocal competition adjudicator, primarily for the Metropolitan Opera's
Regional Auditions. His recent travels for the Met have taken him to
San Antonio, Boston, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and Saint Paul, among other places.
